Shy Bird – General Manager

Purpose of position:
The General Manager of Shy Bird will oversee all daily operations. The primary focuses of this role will be in-service leadership, cultivation of guest experiences, training and development of staff, and guidance of a management team. This role will actively contribute to Shy Bird’s daily, weekly and quarterly, reflecting both financial and cultural goals, in coordination with Shy Bird’s Director of Operations.

The GM is supported by active ownership, event sales and operations management, all working towards shared goals.

This position will be versed in Shy Bird financial metrics (cost of goods, labor cost, direct operating costs) and be able to respond with action, using support from others.

Daily Responsibilities:

  • Review and adjust OpenTable in alignment with business volume
  • Make floor maps, adjust staffing thoughtfully
  • Execute private events, in the restaurant space
  • Order restaurant wares as needed based on breakage and business volume
  • Create memorable guest experiences
  • Contribute to nightly management log, used to continually refine operations and guest experience

Team Responsibilities:

  • Learn and understand all elements of Shy Bird’s service model
  • Commit to continued learning across food, beverage and service
  • Interview, hire and onboard new Shy Bird service employees
  • Develop opportunities for employees to grow in both guest relations, skill set and position
  • Observe HR best practices in all elements of employee interaction related to hiring, training, development and employee exits

Guest Responsibilities:

  • Cultivate guest experiences, both in the restaurant and off-premise, that are reflective of Shy Bird’s values, hospitality and product offerings
  • Dedicate time and energy to the front door, prioritizing the guest first impression
  • Contribute to digital presence by responding to guest reviews across multiple platforms
  • Support marketing initiatives, both spontaneous and strategic, that enhance guest acquisition and sales growth

Business Responsibilities:

  • Review of all Hourly schedules prior to publish
    • (Financial & Hospitality impact to operations)
  • Complete weekly manager agenda and lead meetings
  • Cash log management and weekly deposits
  • Oversight of KPI input and tracking
  • Weekly payroll review and submission to Owners/Ops
  • Oversight of Beverage program
    • Inventory Management
    • Service standards
    • Operational procedures
  • Oversight of FOH department
    • Ongoing training
    • Steps of service
    • Opening and closing checklists
  • Professional development of management team
    • Oversight of AOR’s
    • PDP’s (professional development plans)
    • PIP’s (professional improvement plans)
    • 1:1’s with managers
  • Handle all disciplinary issues involving corrective actions, terminations or suspensions
  • Working with Assistant Manager to oversee training schedules, promotion criteria and team check ins
  • Monitoring restaurant smallwares
  • Tracking and logging weekly deposits and paid outs
  • Oversight of all general maintenance issues along with Operations Manager

Compensation Package:

  • Annual Base Salary Range
  • Health Insurance
    • 100% coverage at the PPO level (individual)
    • For Family Coverage (unlimited subscribers) the equivalent amount is covered
    • Vision, Dental Insurance Offered, with employee responsible for the costs
  • 401K, with company match at 1 year that vests on your 4th year anniversary date
    • Eligible to enroll at the completion of 90 days of employment
  • $270 per month travel stipend ($3,240 gross annually)

Annual Bonus Potential:

  • Potential of up to 10% of Base Salary ($10,000 gross annually, prorated by start date) available after 90 days.
  •  Metrics for bonuses are based on the restaurant’s goals for Income before Depreciation set in the annual budget and will be reviewed during onboarding
