The North End’s buzziest new Italian steakhouse is actually a stylish refresh of Umbria, a much-loved multi-level restaurant, jazz club, and nightclub that closed in the Financial District in 2017. Much like the former hotspot, the new iteration of Umbria from Frank DePasquale and the DePasquale family will feature multiple floors of dining with an updated modern feel, plus it boasts one of the only rooftop lounges in the North End.
The sleek new space, which takes over the former Ristorante Fiore on Hanover Street, is a bit smaller than the original Umbria but still has plenty of room for 368 guests, including a private dining room with its own pergola, and space for 80 on the rooftop. Featuring ornate Italian stonework, exposed beams and neutral tones, the vibe is like an upscale, comfortable villa filled with high end finishings and North End imagery.
Along with the fresh look and locale is a brand new menu from DePasquale Ventures corporate chef Nello Caccioppoli, which features everything from a selection of raw bar bites and seafood towers, all the way up to a 36-oz. prime tomahawk ribeye for two. There are an array of small bites to start such as Prime Sirloin Tartare with quail egg, shallots, dijon, bruschetta al ciabatta, and Maine Lobster Tacos with salmon roe and seaweed salad, as well as luscious plates of pasta like Short Rib Caramelle (braised short ribs with ricotta, brown butter, cremolata, and balsamic), and Lobster Dumplings with lobster beurre blanc, caviar, black sesame and chives. The steak selection is substantial, including prime filet mignon, A5 Japanese Wagyu sirloin, prime bone-in sirloins and ribeyes, and if you’re not feeling steak-y you can choose a Colorado rack of lamb or veal chop, baked stuffed lobster, or bone-in swordfish steak. Start your night off right with a classic martini or signature cocktail, then move on to something from the stellar wine list either by the glass or by the bottle, which includes an excellent selection of Italian whites and reds, plenty of American notables, and a robust collection of heavy hitter bottles “from the vault.” Take a spin through the menu below.
