If you’ve ever thought that Boston could use some Portuguese summer holiday vibes, get ready to live out your coastal vacation dreams at Baleia. The newest location from the Coda Restaurant Group (SRV, Gufo, The Salty Pig) is set to open on Wednesday, March 6th on the ground floor of The Troy Building, conveniently located at the intersection of the South End and South Boston.

The new space is all decked out with eye popping design from Boston-based RODE Architecture, including lots of modern Portuguese influences like limewashed walls, sunny yellow fabric accents, patterned tiles and a ceiling sculpture by Yellow Goat Design. There’s mixed seating including inviting banquettes, booths and traditional tables, and a spacious bar and lounge area, which can accommodate up to 90 people.

Executive chef Andrew Hebert designed the seafood-heavy, tapas-style menu to reflect the Mediterranean coastal feel of the space, including dishes using traditional copper cookware (Cataplana) like Pork and Seafood Stew. There are small plates that are perfect for mixing and matching, like Octopus Carpaccio with crispy potato, pimenta aioli and moroccan black olive; Grilled Sardines with turmeric chermoula and preserved lemon; and Grilled Mushrooms with harissa, charred onion yogurt and fried shallot. Plus there are more substantial bites like Suckling Pig with orange, braised greens and crispy pig ears; and a Whole Roasted Fish with charred lemon, presunto + anchovy.

There’ll be lots to sip as well including some stylish “tonicos” and cocktails inspired by the Iberian Peninsula, wines by the glass, and a thoughtful selection of local and imported beers and ciders. They also have a substantial all-Portuguese wine list if you’re in the mood for a bottle for the table.

Baleia will be open for dinners Tuesday through Sunday from 5:00 to 9:00pm, and you can book reservations here. Be sure to follow their IG to keep up with all the haps, and bookmark their website for more pics of the space and any menu updates after they open.
