Gufo is a modern Italian restaurant and cafe that is the first foray into Cambridge from the Coda Restaurant Group, which includes Boston’s Salty Pig and SRV. Named for the Italian word for “owl,” Gufo mixes lively, contemporary dishes with the authentic, uncomplicated virtues of Italian cuisine.

Located at 660 Cambridge Street in East Cambridge, the space straddles a few identities: a counter-service café by day and sit-down restaurant in the evening. Plus there’s a stylish bar serving up snacks and pizza all day and night.

The daytime menu serves up pastries and sandwiches which you can take to go or have a seat in the dining room or in the ample outdoor space. At night, the menu is divvied up into four sections including a delightful mix of snacks, small plates and salads, pasta and 12-14 inch pizzas from the grand blue-tiled pizza oven, so you can stop in for a light bite after work with friends or mix and match a fabulous dinner feast for the table. If you’re feeling thirsty, there’s freshly roasted coffee, kombucha, and specialty sodas, plus a rotating selection of beers on draft, wine options, and a seasonal craft cocktail lineup.

The space was designed by Boston-based Rode Architects Inc. with rich shades of orange and blue, blonde wood, bone tile, warm lighting, concrete accents and whimsical owl wallpaper. There’s a mix of seating between sleek circle booths, banquettes, and traditional tables in the dining room with vaulted ceilings and picture windows and a 16-seat U-shaped bar. Plus there’s a 50-seat rustic-chic all weather covered patio that leads to a large, multi-faceted outdoor space with a bocce court. From a night out for two to a bocce party for a group, Gufo is the spot for good times and great eats.
