Back to School at BU

If the falling leaves and the crisp autumn weather have you feeling all nostalgic for your school days, sign on for one of Boston University‘s seminars in food and wine and get back into the classroom, or the kitchen as the case may be. With a mix of tastings and cooking demonstrations, as well as hands-on classes, the semester affords food lovers the opportunity to work alongside some of the city’s top chefs. Autumn in New England with Chris Douglass
Let Chris Douglass, chef/owner of Ashmont Grill and Tavolo, introduce you to the foods that inspire him. Douglass will teach techniques that showcase the best of the season, with a menu that includes freshly harvested ingredients. Class, which is scheduled for Thursday, October 1st from 6:00-9:00pm, costs $125 per person.

Stir with Barbara Lynch
Join award-winning chef Barbara Lynch, the culinary force behind No. 9 Park, B&G Oyster, The Butcher Shop, and Sportello, for a special evening of food and drink. Lynch will demonstrate recipes from her new cookbook Stir, and the class will sample the dishes paired with wines selected by wine director Cat Silirie. Class, which is scheduled for Friday, November 6th, 6:00-8:00pm, costs $80 per person which also includes a copy of the book.

Hungry Mother with Barry Maiden
Join Barry Maiden, chef and co-owner of Hungry Mother in Cambridge, and one of Food & Wine‘s Best New Chefs 2009-for a meal that is inspired by Appalachia, steeped in French technique, and paired with wine. Class, which is scheduled for Monday, November 9th from 6:00-9:00pm, costs $125

The Art and Science of Old-Time Cocktails
Join Eastern Standard‘s award-winning bartender and master mixologist, Jackson Cannon, as he traces the evolution of smashes, juleps, and the Old Fashioned to a time before the word cocktail even existed. Enjoy side-by-side versions of these cocktails and rediscover the techniques needed to produce them for home entertaining. Class, which is scheduled for Monday, November 16th from 6:00-8:00pm, costs $40 per person.

Flavors of Anatolia with Ana Sortun & Ihsan Gurdal
In celebration of the 14th Boston Turkish Festival, Ana Sortun of Oleana and Sofra Bakery and Café teams up with Ihsan Gurdal of Formaggio Kitchen to present an evening of exquisite food and Kavaklidere wines from the Turkish region of Anatolia. Sortun’s and Ihsan’s expertise on the culture and cuisines of Turkey will transport you directly to this glorious country. Class, which is scheduled for Thursday, December 3rd from 6:00-8:00pm, costs $60 per person.
