From the same group that brought Five Horses Tavern to life in Davis Square and the South End comes Worden Hall, a modern alehouse perched right on top of the Red Line in South Boston. Drop in and hole up with friends and family in this cozy, racetrack-themed joint where you can watch the game with a beer or while the night away making a (small) dent in their massive whiskey list while sampling thoughtful pub-style fare and some of the best deep-dish pizza in all of Boston.
Claiming no allegiance to king or country, the menu at Worden Hall meanders the globe collecting all the delicious things one might want to eat while drinking in a pub. It’s a who’s who of international comfort cuisine, with ingredients from all over the map featured in a variety of high-end, house-made bar food. The menu is large, with a variety of sandwiches, soups, salads, and appetizers for sharing and light bites in addition to hearty, hefty entrees. There are plenty of vegetarian options, and gluten-free selections are labeled as such.
The restaurant’s name was taken from a 19th century guest house, and that vibe of antique hospitality is heavy in the air at Worden Hall. The room glows as if its lit by flickering lanterns, full of dark woods and exposed bricks that will make you feel cozy and like another pint is probably a better idea than braving the elements. Snuggle into a high-backed studded leather banquette with your boo or belly up to the long wooden bar and see if you can count the taps.
If you get to 40, you counted right. The draught list is impressive and ever-changing, so don’t bother trying to keep up. The real showstopper is the selection of brown booze, with a whiskey list topping out at a hundred bottles featuring barrel-aged spirits from all over the world. The wine list is similarly diverse, with a well-rounded selection accompanied by helpful flavor profile descriptions, and the craft cocktails are cheeky and creative, combining homemade ingredients with unexpected flavors.
Worden Hall offers private dining for parties up to 26, and is equipped with a projector screen for presentations (or embarrassing slide shows).
