Green Crab Week is Back

There’s only one way to fight the spread of an invasive crab species: pick up a fork and get to work. Green Crab Week is back from Tuesday, June 22nd through Sunday, June 28th and plenty of hangouts around The Hub are getting in on the action. At Pagu, diners can grab a tempura-fried soft-shell green crab stuffed into a squid ink bao and topped with ramp kimchi aioli, togarashi, and pickled red onions, for instance, and there’s plenty more to taste at Althea, Viale, Urban Hearth, Moeca (which is literally named for the little buggers) and more.

European green crabs have been wreaking havoc on shellfish populations and eelgrass habitats for quite some time now, but unlike knotweed they make for pretty good eats. Take a peek at the list of participating restaurants serving up the goods (and raising awareness) on the official Green Crab Week website to plan a tasting around greater Boston and other U.S. cities, and, while you’re there, get all educated about why green crabs are a problem for local fisheries, where to buy them, how to eat them, recipes and other resources.
