On Monday, September 13th, UpStairs on the Square will hold a memorial fundraiser in honor of Nicholas Valencia, a co-worker and friend, who died early in the morning on the last Sunday in July when the car driving him home from his second job crashed on McClellan highway in East Boston. On the staff since their opening, Nicholas was from outside Medellin, Colombia. He leaves behind a wife and five children. The Latin-inspired cocktail party will run from 5:30-8:30pm and feature small bites from restaurants like Blue Ginger, Grill 23 & Bar, Locke-Ober, No. 9 Park, Perdix, Oleana, The Fireplace and UpStairs on the Square, among others. A film by filmmaker and UpStairs server Vicente Fernandez, examining the immigrant life, with moving footage of Nicolas talking about his life in America, will be shown. Tickets for the event cost $25 per person; proceeds benefit the Valencia Family Fund.
