Caffe Umbra: Out of the Shadows and into the Limelight

Caffe Umbra, the long-anticipated collaboration between chef Laura Brennan (formerly of Mercury Bar) and chef-turned-general-manager Jim Becker, (of Rauxa and Taranta), has, for a little over a year now, been getting comfortable in the burgeoning area on the fringe of the South End. In the shadow of the Holy Cross Cathedral on Washington Street, Caffe Umbra (umbra means shadow in Italian) is a warm, inviting neighborhood spot with a menu that demonstrates Brennan’s Italian heritage, as well as her classic French training via dishes like seared sea scallops or grilled asparagus.
