The Wellington in Belmont has more than two centuries of hospitality in its roots, nodding to both the Wellington railroad station and the Wellington Homestead and Tavern that provided food and lodging for weary souls traveling between Boston and Concord. Today, it’s a neighborhood joint helping both locals and wanderers celebrate all occasions—from date night to game time—with an eclectic blend of local and global cuisine, a reliable list of local beer and cider, and wines from around the world.

Balancing comfort food and creative cuisine is a high-wire act not a lot of places manage, but the Wellington serves up New England seafood and heart-warming pub fare with international flavors and lighter options that won’t weigh you down. Don’t be surprised to find Moroccan spices on your organic chicken and miso mingling with the potato skins. For traditionalists, there’s a whole section devoted to burgers, and those looking to keep it lean should look to the salad selection (which can be bolstered by adding protein). There’s a separate Kids’ menu with simpler stuff for the tykes, and gluten free options are delineated across the board.

The Wellington may have history in its veins, but its bones are all modern. The room is high-ceilinged industrial chic, with antique lights, exposed brick, and distressed concrete accented with brightly colored fabrics in the bar-stools and banquettes. An open kitchen keeps things vibrant, and the tables are unclothed to keep things informal. And just like the menu, the restaurant itself offers a variety of experiences depending on your mood, your group, and your plans for the evening. From intimate high-backed booths to an expansive bar, the Wellington is up for after-work drinks, a romantic evening, or a quick stop on your way through town.

The bar is long, sleek, and lit from below, offering beverages with an unbroken view of the three extra-large TVs. The cocktail list is on par with anything in the city, offering shrubs and infusions all made in-house. Beers on tap are sorted by flavor profile in a craft-heavy list that remains both local and interesting, with a few cider and gluten-free options in the mix. The wine list is approachable, keeping things budget-friendly without being boring, offering glass bottle selections from around the world.

The Wellington has a number of private dining options, including a private dining room that can seat up to 25 guests.
