Waypoint, the sophomore restaurant from the award-winning team behind Harvard Square’s Alden & Harlow, opened in Cambridge in the summer of 2016. For chef-owner Michael Scelfo the name, which often means a plot point on a map, signals a natural next step along his culinary journey.

The menu at Waypoint showcases Scelfo’s forward-thinking approach to coastally-inspired fare as well as his finely tuned skill at combining approachable ideas and ingredients with unexpected flourishes. The seafood heavy menu, which includes ample raw bar selections as well as a daily crudo and caviar service, also features pizzas and pastas made with grains milled in-house daily. Gluten-free versions will be available upon request and there will be shareable roasts for meat eaters (in groups of two or three).

A light and approachable cocktail program features a market-driven approach to mixology with a heavy focus on coastal spirits such as rum, mezcal, agave, sherry and gin. Waypoint will feature 20 varieties of absinthe behind the bar as well as a copper absinthe tap that serves as a dedicated line for the mystifying liqueur. The thoughtfully curated wine list, which includes a selection of magnums and a special reserve list, is designed to pair perfectly with seafood.

Located on Mass Ave just outside of Harvard Square, Waypoint welcomes guests with a 24-seat bar and a modern and light dining room outfitted in grays and earthy greens -hued dining room. The ceiling is an intricate pattern of floating driftwood planks accented by custom lighting installations that mimic weathered fishing hardware. A centrally-located communal table serves as a focal point (and a perfect perch for larger groups) while the Carrera marble-topped kitchen pass doubles as a chef’s table for four to five guests.
