Breakfast: the final frontier. Jamaica Plain might not seem like a galaxy far far away, but Little Dipper on Center Street is a funky diner with an intergalactic theme serving hearty home cookin’ that’s out of this world. Whether you’re out for a Sunday meal with the family or just after a quick eggs and coffee with your morning paper, this cozy neighborhood joint has everything you need along with a healthy portion of fun.
This Little Dipper is no greasy spoon. Offering breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner, the menu is loaded with diner-style classics that utilize fresh ingredients and very few frills beyond the dishes’ spacey names. For breakfast you’ll find familiar combos of eggs-any-style, bacon-or-sausage, and what-kind-of-toast, with a few healthier options if that’s your thing and homemade doughnuts if it isn’t. Lunch, served contemporaneously with breakfast, adds signature sandwiches and salads to the mix, and dinner piles on a selection of comfort-style Apps & Sides as well as Plates—full diner-style meals complete with protein, starch, and veggie. They’ve got a Kid’s menu, too, because what kid doesn’t want to eat on Mars?
Other than the model rockets spinning from the ceiling and posters advertising life on distant planets, the space (get it?) is actually pretty down-to-earth. It’s a tiny cafe in vibrant teal, with bright red ketchup and yellow mustard bottles standing proudly on every table. You’ll have to choose between banquette and chair no matter where you sit, and expect to be rubbing elbows with your fellow space-travelers during peak hours.
There’s no bar at Little Dipper, but the beverage list covers all the bases. House Bloody Marys and Mimosas will satisfy the brunch crowd, and you can wash down your lunch or dinner (or breakfast, nobody’s judging) with a modest but well-curated selection of reds, whites, and rosés by the glass. The beers are all packaged goods, with crafty cans from near and far in a variety of styles. And, like any good diner, they’ve got plenty of coffee, tea, OJ, and soda to keep you hydrated and caffeinated.
