It’s a bar. It’s an arcade. Its…a barcade? Whatever you call it, A4cade in Central Square—the nostalgic collaboration between the grilled-cheese gurus at Roxy’s and the pizza pros at Area Four Central Square—is a lot of fun. Whether you’re just stopping by for a sandwich from the counter or making your way through the secret entrance (no spoilers!) to drink and play the night away in the arcade out back, you and your crew are in for a whimsical and delicious good time.
What began as a food truck has become a Boston area staple, with creative and craveable comfort food like gourmet grilled cheese and loaded tots keeping fans coming back for more. Sandwiches are the mainstay of the menu, with a section for burgers and dogs and a few veggie-friendly options, as well as snack-food sides perfect for one-handed eating while you game or sharing amongst friends.
Walking in the front door at Roxy’s you’ll be greeted by a quick and efficient counter-style restaurant with a few booths and minimal seating along the window. It’s bright and open and designed to get you good food fast. The real fun begins behind closed doors, where you’ll be transported to a retro 80s arcade with all your childhood memories vying for your attention. Classic arcade games, shuffleboard, air hockey, and pinball are all crammed together between two bars so you’ll never have to leave your game long to stay hydrated.
Behind the bar the nostalgia continues, with a cocktail list based on video games and TV shows from the 80s and 90s that will make you feel like a kid again…except you’ll be drinking. Some of the cocktails light up, others are served in lunchbox thermoses, all of them are weird and delicious and made with the same level of craft and care as any top-notch cocktail bar in the city, with a cartoon twist. There are one- and two-player options in case you feel like taking on that boozy boss together, and a fun and funky beer and wine selection if mixed drinks aren’t your thing.
Despite being an arcade, A4cade is just for grownups and requires a valid ID to enter. The space is available for private event rentals in case you feel like throwing the least grownup and most awesome birthday (or whatever) party imaginable.
