Citizen’s School of Whiskey

Citizen Public House & Oyster Bar

Everyone’s going back to school this month, and if you want all the excitement of a first-day outfit without all the homework you can head to Citizen for the fall semester at their School of Whiskey. Each month the posh Fenway pub will take a deep dive into some of the world’s best whiskies and bourbons, including visits from master distillers and company founders, as well as rare pours, specialty cocktails, and single-barrel releases. The curriculum kicks off this month with Tennessee’s award-winning Uncle Nearest distillery.

Pop by anytime in September for a whiskey of the week pour, or explore their catalog including Uncle Nearest 1856, Uncle Nearest 1884 Small Batch, and Nearest Green 1820 Single Barrel US-1, the latter of which you can only get at Citizen as it’s sold out through 2027. You can even clink glasses with their featured cocktail, a Tennessee Boulevardier made with Uncle Nearest 1856, Coconut-Washed Campari, and Sweet Vermouth.

If you want some extra credit, Kitty Amman, the label’s local market manager and Boston bar impresario, will be holding office hours from 5:00 to 7:00pm on Thursday, September 21st to kick off Oktoberfest with some Uncle Nearest boilermakers at the bar, and she can answer any Qs you might have about the spirits-maker that was founded by world’s first-known African American master distiller, Nearest Green. However you choose to tackle the subject matter, the Citizen folks will be on hand to tutor you one dram at a time, just keep an eye on their socials (FB and IG) for updates on the syllabus, and give them a call at 617.450.9000 if you have any Qs.
