The Buttery is a neighborhood bakery/café with a full restaurant and bar featuring seasonally inspired cuisine, with two prepared foods takeout markets and a growing corporate catering business. They are located in the heart of the South End and have been a local mainstay since 2005. Their menus emphasize seasonal, farm-fresh, local ingredients and a wide variety of options ranging from modern twists on New American classics to heart healthy menu items.

Key Qualifications:

  • At least 3-4 years prior baking experience in a high-volume kitchen
  • Culinary degree preferred but not required
  • Positive and professional attitude

  • Creativity and passion for the culinary arts
  • Broad knowledge of baking — batters, doughs, tarts, mousse, cakes, decorative work, plate desserts

As Pastry Chef, you will:

  • Support the day-to-day functions of the Bakery operations.

Your essential job functions will be:

  • Manage all bakery operations, including training, supervising and mentoring production staff, following recipes and creating new recipes and menu items for all Bakery operations.
  • Promote trust and respect among co-workers.
  • Communicate company and job specific information to staff.
  • Collaborate with the culinary director and promote teamwork to help achieve company goals.
  • Working with the operations manager, develop adequate scheduling to manage customer volume throughout hours of operation.
  • Adhere to all local, state and federal laws and company guidelines and policies, including food safety regulations and guidelines.
  • Create an environment that enables customers to feel welcome, important and appreciated by answering questions regarding products sold within the department and throughout the stores.
  • Gain and maintain knowledge of products sold within the department and be able to respond to questions and make suggestions about products.
  • Prepare bakery items per customer requests using proper bakery equipment.
  • Prepare foods according to the food temperature logs and follow baking instructions.
  • Working with the culinary director, develop and implement a plan to increase production and profitability.
  • Inform and educate staff about current, upcoming and special in-store promotions.
  • Maintain an awareness of inventory/stocking conditions and note any discrepancies in inventory.
  • Practice preventive maintenance by properly inspecting equipment and notify the operations manager of any items in need of repair.
  • Notify management of customer or employee accidents.
  • Report all safety risks, issues and illegal activity, including robbery, theft or fraud.
