Codman Community Farms – Farm Kitchen Assistant

Located in the heart of Lincoln, Codman Community Farms (CCF) is a 501c3 non-profit founded in 1973 with the mission to operate a working farm that preserves Lincoln’s rural character by highlighting the importance of local farming and local food and inviting community involvement through educational opportunities and events. The farm consists of an 18-acre farmstead complete with historic barns, outbuildings, farm housing, community garden plots, orchard, and fields as well as over 160 acres of privately owned or town-conserved farmland located throughout the towns of Lincoln and Concord.

Lincoln is a classic New England town with an old-world feel – with a population of only 6000 and located less than 15 miles from downtown Boston, and 1000 feet from the commuter rail station. The town is home to over 80 miles of walking trails and an amazing oasis of woodlands and open farm fields.

Over its 50 years, CCF’s farm programs and community activities have gradually evolved and grown from a seasonal initiative to a year-round production farm that now raises 100% grass-fed Red Devon cattle, pasture-raised livestock including pigs, laying hens, meat chickens, turkeys, and lambs as well as a thriving vegetable market garden. The farm sells direct to consumers through its self-serve Farm Store and now has an on-site commercial kitchen.

In 2021, CCF renovated an aging residential kitchen into a new modern commercial kitchen. This new space was built to allow CCF to begin showcasing the high-quality proteins and produce the farm grows and present it to our community in the form of value-added products. Over the past year, we’ve worked to prepare, in many cases, underutilized proteins and produce and convert them into tasty, high-quality foods for our community to enjoy. Our kitchen was also built to provide a teaching space to educate the public on cooking techniques and food preservation, and as a gathering place to discuss the value of growing and eating locally grown products.

This new kitchen has become the center of a new set of connected gathering spaces on the farm where we celebrate the intersection of food production, sustainable land stewardship, and our shared community values. In addition, the farm is currently constructing a new pavilion to further enhance our ability to welcome moderate sized groups to the farm. This new custom-built post and beam building is located in the very heart of the farm and will contain a large commercial grade wood-fired oven which will further enhance our ability to prepare and serve our farm grown fare in a unique and beautiful setting.

Job Description

As the Codman Kitchen continues to grow and meet the demands of our customers, we have created the role of Farm Kitchen Assistant to increase production, expand our offerings, and maintain a consistent stock of prepared food items in the farm store that our customers have grown to rely on.

The Farm Kitchen Assistant will report to the Farm Kitchen Chef. The role of Farm Kitchen Assistant will be to support the ventures of the Codman Kitchen which includes but is not limited to creating ready-to-eat food for the farm store, hosting events and classes, and making food for special events.

This new position will average 20 hours per week for an initial 6-month contract period. At the end of 6 months, the contract may be extended, depending on Farm needs as well as job performance.

Responsibilities

Kitchen Setup and Maintenance

  • Maintain a clean and orderly kitchen environment which includes washing dishes, cleaning all surfaces, walls, floors, windows, etc.
  • Follow all food safety systems, protocols, and procedures to ensure a food-safe working environment
  • Reports any and all performance and or safety issues to Farm Kitchen Chef

Food Production

  • Execute existing recipes to established, consistent standards
  • Slice deli meats
  • Maintain store stock of prepared food items

Teaching and Food Event Support

  • Help with educational and food events

Other

  • Complete and maintain ServSafe and Allergen awareness certifications, implement all associated procedures
  • Assist store customers as needed
  • Complete other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Candidates must: 

  • Have at least 1 year working in a professional kitchen, equivalent experience considered
  • Be passionate about the CCF mission, farming, food, and sustainability
  • Be able to work 20+ hours/week, at times may include weekends (must be punctual and reliable)
  • Be comfortable following and executing recipes
  • Be motivated to work as a team and take direction
  • Be comfortable working quickly and independently, keeping clean and organized
  • Be able to multitask and work efficiently
  • Adhere to food safety procedures
  • Complete Allergy Awareness and ServSafe certifications
  • Be able to pass a CORI check due to work with children and volunteers..
  • Be able to perform needed functions as part of daily work including standing for long periods of time, lifting and carrying heavy items, bending, stooping, and kneeling
  • Have a positive attitude, open-mindedness, and willingness to honestly and openly communicate to solve problems
