Alcove – Bar Lead

Scope & General Purpose: As Bar Lead, this position takes a pivotal role in guiding cocktail and beer programs, guest service over the bar, and cocktail menu development. In collaboration with the General Manager and Tom Schlesinger-Guidelli, Owner, you will oversee cocktail menu development, staff education, NA beverage, liquor, and beer ordering, inventory, and care for the Bar space and equipment.

Schedule: Full-time flexible schedule, with four days of floor/bar shifts and one administrative day 

Reports to: General Manager & Tom Schlesinger-Guidelli, Owner

Compensation: Hourly + tips for bartending/floor shifts, $20/hour for administrative work

Physical Requirements: 

  • Able to work ten hour-plus shifts, plus ability to stand, sit, squat, or walk for extended periods of time, walk up and down stairs
  • Able to grasp, reach overhead, push, lift, and carry up to 50 pounds

Bartending Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all aspects of the beverage program including budget, inventory, menu development and planning, employee training, and education
  • Ensure the quality of the beverage program offered by the restaurant is of the highest standard, reflective of the restaurant’s identity and restaurant execution needs
  • Present seasonal and regular menu changes, with thought given to creativity, cost, and execution
  • Incorporate Bar team into menu development in a meaningful, professional, growth-oriented manner
  • Assist in interviewing, training, and coaching Bar staff, to include developing employees in the Alcove Three Tier System of Barback, Bar Steward, and Bartender
  • Set an example of professionalism, always striving to build valuable guest relationships 
  • Determine Bar preparation needs based on level of business, changes in menu, or special events
  • Receive Bar products and supplies weekly, ensuring all inventory is accurate and stored in an organized manner
  • Be the voice of the Bar in Daily Briefing and provide information on Bar products, technique, NA beverage, cocktail, and beer menus, and overall beverage education
  • Display commitment to volume-oriented service with precise execution during all Bar shifts
  • Participate in and help with public events, private events, and key marketing opportunities related to the Bar program

Bar Responsibilities:

  • Develop initiatives to continually create repeat Bar guests, as well as recover guest experiences
  • Assist in keeping the restaurant compliant with all applicable health codes and regulations
  • Oversee all Beverage Program orders, inventory, and relationships with vendors
  • Complete weekly ordering in a timely and fiscally responsible manner
  • Maintain an appropriate inventory based on volume across NA beverage, cocktail, & beer programs
  • Provide continuing education and development for both the Bar team and front-of-house staff
  • Assist in training new Bar staff in steps of service, cocktail preparation techniques, food, and beverage knowledge
  • Oversee maintenance of the Bar space, beverage storage areas, and prep space, to include beverage product, fruit, ice, glassware, and overall organization and cleanliness behind the Bar 
  • Evaluate new revenue channels, such as holiday programming, classes, tastings, & partnerships
  • Communicate directly with any vendor contacts to determine needs for partnership

Job Requirements:

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience working in hospitality, preferably behind the Bar
  • Strong working knowledge of bartending, food, and beverage
  • Ability to work well under pressure in a fast-paced, ever-changing work environment 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills 
  • Highly organized, with strong attention to detail 
  • High integrity and professionalism
