Partners Michael Krupp and Chef Jeff Pond bring their brand of neighborhood-focused hospitality to the South End with the opening of Area Four Boston. Like its Cambridge counterpart, Area Four Boston cooks with fire – in a custom-built, copper-domed Maine Wood Heat oven. The menu emphasizes food cooked in and over open flames and wood embers alongside signature A4 pizzas (the perfect platform for traditional and seasonal toppings). These pies pull elements from Neapolitan and New Haven styles to create their own category. The end result is marked by the cooked sauce of a New Haven pie with the crust of a Neapolitan pizza.
The bar program features playful, varied cocktails sure to please both adventurous and classic palates, as well as a wide array of wines, and a robust beer program including 17 draught beers and bottled offerings.
Area Four Boston offers two distinct experiences under one roof. While the light, airy dining room is peppered with pops of red, orange and yellow that echo the flames blazing in the custom oven, the bar is industrial, dark and dramatic – featuring a dropped ceiling, black bar and chairs, and a dozen old-school black and white TVs. Vintage elements like the large two-turntable record player are combined with more contemporary items, including a wide array of 90s era hip hop records from owner Krupp’s personal collection. The laser-projected video art, bold colors, floating chairs and mid-century modern detailing bring the two spaces together in perfect harmony.
